Introduction:

ALATAS has been tasked with replacing the slew bearing on our client’s NOV Knuckle Boom Pedestal Offshore India.

Background:

Continuous condition monitoring conducted by the customer revealed a consistent deterioration in the axial clearance measurements and grease samples of the slew bearings. This proactive monitoring approach enabled the customer to schedule preventive maintenance for the bearings, ensuring minimal downtime and uninterrupted rig operations.

ALATAS Solution:

ALATAS Singapore responded by offering a comprehensive turnkey solution, leveraging the collaboration of multiple offices to ensure high-quality and efficient service delivery. The engineering team conducted an initial site survey to gather essential information for the design process. The UK design team developed a 2-point jacking system solution utilizing the existing crane jacking points. This project involved collaboration among ALATAS teams in the UK, Singapore, Dubai, and India, with ALATAS providing specialist equipment such as the jacking console, hydraulic cylinders, HPU, and Flatness check Machine. The Indian team led the offshore delivery, supplying engineers and field service technicians.

Job Scope:

Jacking Frame Design:

  • Review crane data and determine the most suitable jacking method.
  • Create a 3D model of the crane.
  • Design the jacking frame and a skidding frame to facilitate efficient slew bearing replacement.
  • Prepare fabrication drawings.

Slew Bearing Changeout:

  • Disconnect and remove the slip ring.
  • Remove both slew motors, brake packs, and gearboxes.
  • Remove slew bolts.
  • Conduct a controlled trial lift to determine the center of gravity.
  • Jack up the crane.
  • Verify pedestal flatness using a laser and provide a condition report.
  • Remove the old slew bearing and install the new one.
  • Lower the crane.
  • Install and tension the inner and outer slew bolts (Rotabolts).
  • Reconnect the slip ring.

Commissioning:

  • Perform backlash, rocking motion, and teeth flank contact checks.
  • Conduct a complete function test.
