INTRO

When the Cement Cargo Vessel NACC INDIAN faced a critical issue with its 15-ton hoisting winch, they turned to ALATAS for a rapid and effective solution. This article highlights our prompt response and comprehensive approach to address the vessel’s externally leaking and heavily corroded hoisting winch.

BACKGROUND

Our client approached us with a pressing need for inspection, overhaul, the supply of a new wire rope, functional testing, and a load test for their existing 15-ton McGregor crane on board the NACC INDIAN Cement Cargo Vessel.

ALATAS’ SOLUTION

The ALATAS Middle East team swiftly swung into action, conducting a series of crucial steps to restore the crane to optimal working condition.

JOB SCOPE

Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of the tasks we performed to rejuvenate the hoisting winch:

  1. Initial Meeting: Upon arrival at the vessel, we met with the vessel’s superintendent to discuss the crane’s issues and formulate a plan.
  2. Visual Inspection: We conducted a visual inspection, identifying external leakages and significant corrosion on the hoist winch.
  3. Recommendations: Based on our findings, we proposed a comprehensive solution, including basic overhauling, wire rope renewal, and load testing.
  4. Client Agreement: The vessel’s superintendent agreed to proceed with the plan, provided it could be completed within one week.
  5. Wire Rope Un-reeving and Winch Removal: Our team un-reeved the wire rope and removed the hoisting winch unit from the vessel.
  6. Workshop Overhaul: The hoist winch underwent a thorough overhaul at the ALATAS Middle East workshop, completed in 4-5 working days.
  7. Surface Treatment: We sandblasted the winch up to Sa 2.5 standards and applied a marine-approved coating.
  8. Corrosion Mitigation: All corroded fasteners, complete seal kits, and bearings were renewed.
  9. Hydraulic System Renewal: We replaced the hydraulic motor and brake assembly seal kits, as well as all corroded fasteners and flexible hoses.
  10. Hydraulic Motor Testing: The hydraulic motor underwent an efficiency test, achieving satisfactory results.
  11. Brake System Renewal: Brake housing and manifold fasteners were all replaced.
  12. Wire Rope Replacement: We supplied and installed a new wire rope within 2-3 working days.
  13. Winch Re-installation: The newly overhauled winch was re-installed by our AME team on board the vessel, using new fasteners.
  14. Functional Testing: We conducted a thorough function test to ensure proper operation.
  15. Dynamic Load Test: Following the function test, a dynamic load test was carried out, with the crane tested at Safe Working Load (SWL) – achieving satisfactory results.
  16. Customer Witnessed Load Test: The load test was conducted as per the customer’s requirements, with a representative from the client present to witness the process.
