The world’s largest container shipping company contracted Alatas Singapore to carry out a deck machinery windlass and mooring winch inspection on one of their vessels.
We are a respected and reliable marine service provider used by this company and many others worldwide. Our deck machinery specialists frequently carry out detailed general check-ups on bulk carriers, container vessels, oil tankers, VLCC and bunkering vessels with expertise in a wide range of deck machinery such as:
- Anchor windlasses
- Windlass/winch combinations
- 4-Point mooring winches
- 8-Point mooring winches
- Electrical components
Ahead of the vessel’s scheduled drydocking in Singapore, Alatas was engaged to complete the condition evaluation a couple of months in advance. This gave our project managers and engineers ample time to set out a full, comprehensive repair plan that was shared and signed off by our client ahead of drydocking.
After our inspection we suggested follow-up recommendations, spare parts proposal, as well as rectification works to be carried out during drydocking.

Test Results and Recommendations
When testing STBD mooring winch, we found the 1st and 2nd speed to be in good order. But when at 3rd speed it stopped after five seconds and a faulty alarm indicated which was faulty. We diagnosed that the PLC input or output card or the load sensor may be defective. So our recommendation was to interchange PLC card from another mooring winch (centre mooring winch).
Proceeded to test aft port mooring winch with deck AB and found the 1st and 2nd speed were in good order. But the 3rd speed has not been working as joystick had no signal to input card. Advised chief officer to get an electrician to check the joystick contact and change from the adjacent centre mooring winch for testing purpose.
The auto-tension had also been out of action for a long time. So further troubleshooting to be carried out by Alatas technicians during the vessel’s next visit.
