For these multiple Liebherr offshore crane upgrades, the customer operates a drillship with three older Liebherr Offshore Cranes, type BOS 65/550D (x1) and BOS 30/300D (x2). The steel construction (the lattice boom in particular) was suffering from corrosion and needed a rebuild.

The work that was required also covered the control system and component overhaul. In addition to the maintenance work on the older cranes, Alatas Houston was called in to conduct a survey on the relatively new Liebherr King Post Crane type MTC 1400/50 also on the drillship.

Alatas experts get to work

An Alatas Senior Offshore Crane Service Engineer performed a detailed crane condition evaluation and assessment of all crane systems; while one of our Structural Crane Engineers evaluated the structural condition of the cranes.

The checks were backed-up by a complete crane evaluation report for the customer, forwarding repair recommendations that included major component repair proposals.

Spare Parts supply

Alatas was able to supply all of the spare parts the cranes required along with ABS class certified materials for the boom repair, other materials for the steel repairs and an ABS Class approved repair procedure for the maintenance needed on the crane boom.

An Alatas Structural Crane Engineer supervised the boom steel repairs and crane structural repairs while Structural Crane Engineers, Welding Inspectors, ABS certified Welders and Fabricators were supplied by the Alatas network to complete all required repairs.

In total, there were more than 20 people on two shifts, working 24 hours. The crane repairs were completed well within the target budget while keeping to its timeline and all were approved by Class Society ABS and the state-owned oil company PDVSA (Petróleos de Venezuela S.A.).

What the customer said about us

“On behalf of all of us here with PetroSaudi in Venezuela, I want to thank you and all of your people in Alatas, and those from MARZ, for the excellent performance demonstrated on the repair of the cranes on our drillship.

Norbert was a fantastic leader, with Leroy, of great crews and I really believe that not many people would have bet a penny on having these cranes ready in the timespan in which you all did this –

Thank you all!”
