The container vessel is 17 years old. The provision monorail crane had corrosion damage and the steel structure was partially wasted. The drive gears were worn and the electrical installation and controls had deteriorated. As part of the vessel’s life extension program, the owners decided to completely refurbish the monorail crane, including upgrading the existing pendant control station to a radio remote crane control system.

Alatas’ Solution

The complete work scope was awarded to Alatas Singapore and was carried out during the vessel’s drydocking. Alatas carried out the following work:

A) Removal from the Ship:

  • Removal of the complete monorail crane and accessories form the I-Beam with gear rack
  • Arrange rigging and craneage to lift the monorail crane assembly off the vessel
  • Place the monorail crane onto a trailer and transport to Alatas workshop

B) Overhaul and refurbish Monorail Crane in Alatas Workshop:

  • Strip the crane off all machinery, fittings and electric installations
  • Sand-blast monorail steel structure & trolley assembly
  • Carry out corrosion repair
  • Re-paint with 3-layer marine paint
  • Re-assemble with new drives, new hoists, new switch cabinets and new locally fabricated hardware
  • Renew all electric wirings
  • Install new radio remote control system
  • Shop test and function test the crane
  • Arrange low bed trailer and re-deliver alongside the vessel in the Ship Yard

C) Re-installation and crane commissioning on board:

  • Lift up overhauled monorail crane and install back onto I-Beam with geared rack
  • Reinstall traveling gear assembly, adjust rack & pinion clearance
  • Install electric connection, all hardware & fittings
  • Adjust limit switches and carry out function testing
  • Carry out overload testing in presence of class surveyor.

Alatas carried out the entire work in time during the drydocking period. The crane now is fit to operate for the remaining life span of the vessel, and that was achieved at a fraction of the cost of a new crane.
