Introduction:

Alatas Indonesia has been requested by the client to carry out grab troubleshooting on the vessel during anchorage.

Background:

The client has requested Alatas Indonesia to investigate the grabs, which have consistently been reported as being closed and unable to open.

Alatas Solution:

ALATAS deployed a team comprising a versatile service engineer and mechanic to diagnose and rectify the issue, enabling the grabs to function normally.

Job Scope:

Upon initial inspection, it was discovered that the “Spider” locking assembly on both sides of the grabs was jammed and unable to rotate, causing the Spider lock to remain in the “grab closed” position.

To address this issue, the spider lock was cleaned, heated, and hammered. Additionally, the 2-unit buffer cylinder was dismantled, and seawater was introduced into the grab to apply more force and weight to the Spider lock during testing. The traverse was repeatedly raised and lowered from the top beam to the lower beam to induce continuous rotation of the spider lock until it loosened.

After several cycles of moving the traverse up and down, the spider lock was able to move freely and function normally.
