Alatas Turkey technicians started the investigations firstly by checking the hoisting and luffing wire rope and sheaves. They checked luffing hoisting and slewing hydromotors hydraulic brakes and then they made the test. After they readjusted the brake piston, the technicians made some recommendations about the brake pad.
BACKGROUND
Alatas Turkey technicians were on the vessel to inspect the Crane due to the hoisting brake failing to hold during the discharging operation carried out at the No. 1 Crane.
ALATAS’ SOLUTION
The technicians attended to the vessel for Crane inspection. Firstly the technicians made all the checks and tests. They made a readjustment and some recommendations.
Job Scope
- After the Alatas Turkey technicians attended to the vessel, they had a meeting with the chief mate. The technicians started the investigations due to the hoisting brake failing to hold during the discharging operation carried out at the No. 1 Crane.
- The Alatas Turkey technicians checked the hoisting and luffing wire rope and sheaves then they removed and also checked the oil filter on the system.
- Luffing hoisting and slewing hydromotors hydraulic brakes were checked by the technicians and no problems with hydraulic brakes were seen. After that, the Alatas Turkey technicians blanked the hoisting brake piston oil circuits and then tested the brake by gradually loading the hydro motor.
- During the test, the brake slipped on the first load. The technicians observed that the reason for this is that the brake performs its duty in overload, but it could not hold because it was above capacity. Accordingly, the brake pad surface is heated and burned due to excessive friction. So they readjusted the brake piston. Lastly, the Alatas Turkey technicians made some recommendations for the work. They recommended replacing the brake pad and they added that if the operation is continued without replacing the brake pad, the brake will not hold at the slightest load. They said that using the brake pad without replacement will be dangerous for the cargo and the vessel.
