Background:

The vessel is equipped with a hydraulic combined Windlass and Double Drum Mooring Winch. The bearing bushes at the Windlass main shaft were worn, and the drive shaft was wasted and out of alignment. A drive shaft repair and overhaul became necessary, including rebuilding and machining of the driveshaft and fitting of new bearing bushes

Alatas Solution:

Alatas, with its expertise in major deck machinery repairs and overhauls of windlasses and mooring winches, responded to the owner’s request. Alatas Singapore mobilized their senior Hatlapa deck machinery service engineer, repair team, and equipment to conduct the repairs at Singapore anchorage.

Job Scope:

  • Proceeded to the windlass starboard side to conduct function testing, revealing noise from pins and bearing bushes.
  • Erected the A-frame, removed the cover, and secured the anchor chain.
  • Welded a nut onto the main drive pin for removal via a hydraulic hollow jack.
  • Dismantled all related windlass parts for a thorough inspection of the main shaft and Gypsy drive shaft.
  • Stripped down and removed both shafts, sending them ashore to the Alatas workshop for repair and rebuilding.
  • Conducted pre-machining of worn-down surfaces, followed by welding and machining to achieve final tolerances.
  • Performed dimensional and out-of-roundness checks before delivering the shafts back on board.
  • Fabricated and supplied new pins and bushings.
  • Returned all removal equipment to the vessel for assembly work.
  • Conducted a function test in the presence of vessel officers.
  • Confirmed the windlass to be in good working order, and suitable for anchoring and mooring operations.

Items Machined and Supplied Urgently by Alatas Workshop for Replacement on the Windlass:

  1. Drive shaft bushes (bronze half bushes): 2 nos.
  2. Drive shaft wear areas were rebuilt by welding, followed by machining the OD-1 unit.
  3. Gypsy shaft wear areas were rebuilt by welding, followed by machining the OD-1 unit.
  4. Machining & Supply of Bronze Spacer Rings (Size: 265 x 195 x 15mm): 2 nos.
  5. Machining & supply of high tensile steel pins of various sizes (3 nos.).
