Alatas Philippines troubleshot and successfully repaired a MacGREGOR Deck crane on a client’s vessel at Davao Port. Additional services such as a crane inspection were also provided to ensure all crane’s readiness.

FULL WORK SCOPE

The vessel was loading containers in the Port of General Santos using her own gear, MacGregor Deck Cranes, type GL 4525.

Crane 2 suddenly stopped working, the crane boom could not be moved anymore. The customer contacted Alatas Philippines for help. A senior MacGregor crane specialist from our Alatas Philippines Crane Service Station was mobilized on an urgent basis, to carry out deck crane troubleshooting on board.

Once he arrived on board, our engineer determined that the electronic controls and the hydraulic controls and systems were working correctly, but the luffing rope winch had a problem. The fault is due to either a problem with the hydraulic motor, a seized planetary gearbox, or a problem with a hydraulically operated lamella brake. Upon further troubleshooting, it was determined that the Brake Lamellas had jammed in the brake housing, and the splines at the drive sleeve got damaged. As no spare Drive-In unit and no spare lamella brake were available on board, our engineer carried out temporary brake repairs by dressing up the damage on the splines. And then reassembled the serviced parts.

The crane function was restored and crane 2 could be handed over to the stevedores to resume container handling again. All was accomplished with minimum time loss and costs to the owners.
