The SMAG grab crane had a
malfunction, e.g. the wire rope snapped, causing the
grab to free-fall back into the cargo hold. There where
serious deformations in the scoops, steering arms, a
shattered electric motor and other damage. The accident
damaged grab was sent to Alatas crane services for
urgent repairs. A full re-build was carried out within
less than 3 weeks, having the grab ready in time for
the next discharge operation and thus avoiding costly
delays to the owner.
The repairs where carried
out under class supervision and the grab was successfully
function and overload tested prior delivery.
