Regular customer Offen Shipping reported problems with one of their TTS cranes on MV Westwood Pacific in Korea.
The symptoms at first appeared to be those of an electronic problem, however the detailed analysis of the error messages by Alatas indicated that there was very likely a mechanical problem as well. It was then agreed with the client that the Alatas service engineer would handcarry electronic spares suitable to the nature of the problem , whereas the client would land a spare winch gearbox from a sister vessel that was in the area at the same time.
The service engineer could indeed confirm the prediction that the hoisting brake had been damaged by the failure of the electronic system.
He then sailed with the vessel from Korea to Japan to replace the hoisting gearbox and troubleshoot the electronic system. The fault was established and the crane ready for operation at the arrival port in Japan
